Egglescliffe School is proud to be the first secondary school in the Tees Valley to be recognised as a School of Sanctuary.

The award recognises our work in three main areas:

  • To learn about what it means to be seeking sanctuary and about the lives of asylum seekers and refugees in the UK.
  • To embed this knowledge and understanding in the curriculum and the daily life of the school including our work with students who do not have English as their first language
  • To share this new knowledge with the school’s wider community including other schools working for the award.

The citation from the awarding body states: ‘we all very impressed with the calibre and the amount of work the school has carried out over the last year, especially your willingness to share this with others… you have set the bar very high .’
The school recognises the hard work of students, staff, both teaching and non-teaching, governors and parents in the achievement of this award. To find out more about School of Sanctuary award and resources visit:
