12 year 10 students successfully complete their Silver practice expedition

Egglescliffe Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award students completed a three-day, two-night expedition this week in the glorious countryside of the Peak District. It was an early 7am start on Thursday morning, as the students travelled the 2 and half hour journey to Cromford to begin their first day walk of their expedition. Students are required to complete a minimum of 7 hours a day at the Silver Award level, and have covered approximately 40km on foot with full backpacks, finishing their expedition in Over Haddon.

All student participants have successfully completed their Bronze Award with the school, and so are not unfamiliar with the expectations of the expedition. However, the warm weather and the diversity of livestock, wildlife and terrain, were a whole new challenge that all students successfully negotiated.

Miss Ghost, Manager of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Egglescliffe School, said: “Our Bronze Award has perfectly set up the students to complete the next level of challenge offered by the Silver Award. The students were exemplary. Their navigation, stamina and determination were outstanding, as well as their positive approach to their teamwork and supporting one another throughout their journey. We couldn’t be prouder.”

The DofE at Egglescliffe is supported by volunteer staff who give up their free time to support the programme. Mrs Plaice and Mr Wilkinson support the training and development of the students across day walks, after-school sessions, and weekend expeditions; the programme really couldn’t run without them.

The Assessed Expedition takes place Thursday 27th – Saturday 29th September 2018.
