The team of specialist history teachers at Egglescliffe seeks to motivate and guide students into becoming confident, enquiring and independent learners. History matters because it is the subject that deals with real people and real events. Only by studying the people and events of the past can we better understand the present.
History is taught by six graduate historians who are experienced in leading history at national level. Examination uptake is very high and the results are excellent. In 2011 GCSE students achieved 85 % A*-C with 49% gaining A*/A. A level saw 100% of the students achieving a pass with 59% gaining grades A or B. Staff and students alike enjoy their history, relish opportunities for trips out of school and visits from outside speakers in school.
History prepares pupils for the future, equipping them with knowledge and skills that are prized in adult life, enhancing employability and developing an ability to take part in a democratic society. It encourages mutual understanding of the historic origins of our ethnic and cultural diversity, and helps pupils become confident and questioning individuals.
