These four equations unify the whole of
classical electromagnetism.Thus Maxwell successfully completed the first
Unified Field Theory. The operator D is a partial
derivative, ( a 3 dimensional version of d/dx ), so we see that the equations
involve rates of change with respect to time as well as three spatial co-ordinates.
Mixing of the Electric (E) and Magnetic (B) fields is apparent from
casual observation , the one transforming into the other depending on relative
motion of field source and observer. These four equations can be written
even more compactly in tensor notation where they reduce to just twofrom
which the whole theory of light as a wave may be constructed..
